SICILY

Sicily is the largest island and region in Italy. It is located under the mainland and separated by the Strait of Messina. The capital is Palermo, located on the northwest coast. The most important feature is Mount Etna. This is Europe’s highest active volcano with its latest eruption during the Christmas season of 2018. The island has a Mediterranean climate. Additionally, the terrain alternates between flat beaches and large mountains. The area has many UNESCO World Hertiage Sites. Castles, churches, Roman ruins, and natural wonders are scattered all over Sicily. Other main cities are Trapani, Agrigento, Caltanisetta, Enna, Ragusa, Siracusa, Catania and Messina.
