ABRUZZO

Abruzzo is a Central and Southern Italian region. The capital, L’Aquila is near the border with Lazio. It also shares a border with the Adriatic Sea, Marche, Molise. Abruzzo and Molise were one region until they were split in 1963. Along with L’Aquila, the provinces of Chieti, Teramo, and Pescara remain. Almost half the land is made up of nature reserves and national parks, and is one of the greenest regions in Europe. It is also home to two different climates. The flat, sandy coast has a hotter, Mediterranean temperature and the high mountain range is much colder. The terrains also give way to varying foods. In-land, “arrostacini” are common, lamb placed on skewers and cooked on an open fire. On the coast, fish dishes are more common, many made with clams and mussles. Property in Abruzzo is fairly cheap so it’s a great place to buy property or retire.
